Exercise 1

• Go to CQPWeb platform at Lancaster University.
• Excecute the following CQPWeb query on the English Europarl Corpus.

"woman" :EUROPARL_DE ![word="Frau"]

• Query mode must be on CQP syntax.
• Also pay attention to the exact syntax of the query!
  • There must not be a white space behind the colon
  • The corpus name must refer to the internal representation of CQP (the short handles for the corpus.
  • You can find the short handles under Corpus Info -> View Corpus Metadata -> CQPweb's short handles for this corpus
• The query searches for instances of the word woman where it is not realized as Frau in the German Europarl Corpus.
  • How is it realized in the German Europarl Corpus, try to abstract from the concrete example!
  • Can you group the different realizations?
  • What does this tell you about the differences between English and German?

Exercise 2

• Formulate an analog query with man and Mann.

Exercise 3

• Rewrite the queries by introducing an article in front of the noun.

Exercise 4

• Perform the same queries by inversing the languages.
